TRANSPARENT PRICING, NO HIDDEN COSTS
I don't participate with insurance companies, and here's why: the insurance model incentivizes quick visits, prescription-focused care, and adherence to one-size-fits-all guidelines—regardless of whether they're right for you.
Functional medicine requires time to understand your history, review research, interpret complex testing, and create truly personalized pathways to health. Insurance doesn't reimburse for this level of care.
CONSULTATION FEES:
Discovery call: $100 (30 minutes)
A substantive consultation to discuss your situation and determine if we're a good fit. If I'm not confident I can help, I'll tell you honestly.
New Patient Consultation: $900 (90 minutes, pro-rated)
Comprehensive initial assessment and treatment plan development.
Follow up visits: $330–$660 (60 minutes, pro-rated)
Pricing depends on membership level.
MEMBERSHIP:
New patients who will likely require monthly visits for a few months: $195/month -- Intensive tier membership
Visits are discounted by 50%
Established patients who have prescriptions with us or several visits per year: $49/month -- Unconventional Health membership; Visits are discounted by 20%. There are further discounts on courses and asynchronous consults.
OUT-OF-NETWORK REIMBURSEMENT:
If your insurance plan includes out-of-network benefits, I provide detailed superbills you can submit for potential reimbursement. Membership fees are not usually covered by these benefits. Many patients recover 50% of consultation fees this way, so you can check with your insurance before booking.
HOW I KEEP YOUR COSTS DOWN:
✓ No supplement sales
Unlike many functional medicine practices, I don't profit from supplement sales while patients are in the Intensive Tier Membership. This saves patients about 35-50% of supplement costs. This helps me avoid the all-too-human issues related to conflict of interest.
✓ Strategic testing
I order only tests that will actually change our approach. No "comprehensive panels" just because we can. If budget is a concern, I'll prioritize testing by importance so you know where to invest first. Note that profiting from lab tests is illegal for medical practices in California.
✓ Discounted lab access
I use professional accounts with Quest and Labcorp to get you the best available pricing—often surprisingly inexpensive.
✓ Simple setup
I do not have an office full of gadgets or a large staff to support.
THE REAL QUESTION:
Is the investment worth it for you? Consider this:
How much have you already spent on:
- Doctors who didn't have answers?
- Tests that didn't lead anywhere?
- Supplements that didn't work?
- Prescription medications with side effects?
- Time off work due to ongoing symptoms?
Functional medicine is an investment—but it's an investment in understanding what's actually wrong and addressing root causes with research-backed approaches, not guesswork. You also learn "flare protocols:" strategies to deal with any recurrences hopefully on your own. For most patients, resolving chronic issues saves money long-term compared to years of symptom management.
TYPICAL PATIENT INVESTMENT (First 6 months, though some achieve their goals sooner):
- Consultations: $3400 if they occur monthly
- Laboratory testing: $100 - $1000 (varies significantly based on what's needed and people's insurance)
- Supplements/protocols: $150 - $250 per month
After the initial phase, most patients spend $50-$100 per month on supplements and see me every 3-6 months ($264-528 per visit with Unconventional Health Membership).

MEDICARE NOTE: I have opted out of Medicare because the Medicare reimbursement model doesn't support the time and approach functional medicine requires. Medicare patients are welcome as private-pay patients. The testing I order is often covered by Medicare.
WE AIM FOR A THOROUGH INTERVENTION
In order to fix a chronic medical issue that has proven resistant to other approaches, we usually have to address several aspects of physiology.
EXCEPTIONS
1. Some people only want “preventive functional medicine.“ We offer a new program for this, look under "Unconventional Longevity Program."
2. It is possible that the problems resolve faster than we expected, in which case we will transition to a maintenance membership sooner.
3. Many young children do not require a 90 minute first medical visit. We pro-rate the fees.
In order to fix a chronic medical issue that has proven resistant to other approaches, we usually have to address several aspects of physiology.
- The functional medicine approach is a layered, systematic approach that addresses one basic physiological “function“ before moving on to the next.
- The first targets are usually digestion, nutrient deficiencies, and glucose regulation. You can expect to see benefits as you begin to address these aspects of your physiology.
- Then we target possible environmental toxicities, for example from heavy metals, mold, or industrial chemicals and pesticides.
- Finally, we look for possible chronic infections. These become chronic specifically because of nutrient deficiencies, digestive issues, inflammation, or toxicity. They may resolve on their own, or require targeted intervention. Completing the course of treatment is meant to prevent backsliding into your original dysfunctions.
