Frequently Asked Questions About Gut Health

Why do integrative medicine doctors always talk about "starting with the gut"?
You've probably heard integrative medicine physicians say "start with the gut." Even Hippocrates said, "all disease starts in the gut." But what does that really mean?

The gut is foundational to your overall health. A healthy gut supports your immune system, produces essential nutrients, reduces inflammation throughout your body, and even affects your brain function. That's why we prioritize gut health in our approach to wellness.

What does "addressing gut health" actually involve?

My approach is to create ideal conditions in your gastrointestinal tract, from top to bottom. This isn't just about taking a probiotic—it's a comprehensive strategy.

Does gut health really start in the mouth?

Yes! Good gut health begins with your mouth. We want to make sure you have good dental hygiene and are addressing any periodontal issues that your dentist may have identified. Poor oral health can introduce harmful bacteria into your digestive system and create inflammation before food even reaches your stomach.

Will I need to change my diet?

Most likely, yes. We focus on which foods you eat because food is medicine and information for your gut. This usually means doing a food tolerance test and following recommendations about foods to avoid and foods to include for several weeks. This personalized approach helps us identify which foods support your healing and which ones may be causing problems, at least temporarily.

I take medication for acid reflux. Is that a problem?
This is really important. We pay close attention to stomach acid levels because many people actually have too little stomach acid, not too much. Conventional physicians often prescribe medications to reduce stomach acid, which can get in the way of developing a healthy gut.

However, you can't just stop these medications on your own: if it is indeed appropriate to stop these, you need a careful strategy to wean off them safely while addressing the underlying issues.

What about probiotics and fiber? I thought those were the answer.

We do use targeted supplements and probiotics as part of our approach. However, we also follow recent science suggesting that fermented foods are more effective at improving gut health than simply eating large amounts of fiber. The research is constantly evolving, and we adapt our recommendations accordingly.

What if I have stubborn digestive problems like constipation, loose stools, or diarrhea?

Some people face significant challenges, such as:
- Severe constipation
- Loose stools or diarrhea
- Autoimmune inflammatory bowel disease

In these cases, we use additional strategies to address and improve these conditions first, before we can optimize the overall gut environment. We need to clear these roadblocks before moving forward.

I've heard about gut bacteria being important. How does that work?

Great question! The best science available tells us that we need to focus on the health and function of your gut overall, before we can optimize the community of beneficial bacteria that should be living in your gut.

Think of it like preparing soil before planting a garden—you need healthy "soil" (all the conditions in the gut) before the beneficial bacteria can thrive.

How do gut bacteria affect the rest of my body?

When your gut is healthy, the beneficial bacteria communicate with your immune system, essentially telling it that the world is a safe place and there's no need for chronic inflammation throughout your body.

These bacteria also produce short-chain fatty acids that support the health of:
  • Colon cells
  • Brain cells
  • Every organ and structure in your body, including bones, kidneys, lungs, and more

So fixing my gut could help with problems beyond just digestive symptoms?

Exactly! A healthy gut is foundational to overall health—it can impact everything from your energy levels and mood to your immune function and risk of chronic disease. We take a systematic, science-based approach to getting you there, which is why "starting with the gut" makes so much sense.
